The Cathedral Notre Dame de Réal
The largest religious edifice in the French Alps, the Cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was built over the period 1170 to 1220. The architecture is strongly influenced the Italian Lombardy style. Notice the main porch (porche Réal) guarded by two lions. The organs, offered by Louis XI, together with the treasure room are the pride of Embrun. The main porch has sheltered a magnificent fresco of the Epiphany for two centuries. Be sure not to miss the 18th century high altar in multicolored marble, the barocco pulpits and the wonderful stain glass windows.
The treasure is housed in the St. Francis chapel and holds a collection of liturgical gowns, gold and silver plate and works of art. All this a sign of the importance of the Archbishop.
The treasure may only be visited by guided tours organised by the Tourist Office.
